Swarmanoid robots may not much resemble the creatures that originally inspired the field, but insects continue to give programmers ideas. Dr Dorigo’s group has, for instance, developed a system to allow robots to detect when a swarm member is malfunctioning. This was inspired by the way some fireflies synchronise their light emissions so that entire trees flash on and off. The robots do the same, and if one light goes out of synch because of a malfunction the other bots can react quickly, either isolating the maverick so that it cannot cause trouble, or calling back to base to have it withdrawn."

As soon as the Man burned, we published the art theme for 2011: Rites of Passage. Here's the short version:
"There are moments of crisis and frisson in our lives which inform us that we've somehow crossed an inner threshold and are changed. Thus moving from one state of being into an unknown other is not a facile transformation; it obliges us to face our innermost insecurities, and it requires faith, a willingness to leap off the ladder of ordered existence. Our theme this year invites participants to join with others in creating rites of passage."

The Origin of Spacewar
This summer, I met Stephen (Slug) Russsell. It was so cool, I was at the computer history museum looking at the PDP-11, and was talking to this cool older guy who was manning the booth. I talked to him for 15 minutes before I clued in that this was THE Stephen Russell! Such a cool experience.

This data set describes the phylogenetic relationships of the orders of birds as reported by Sibley and Ahlquist (1990)
Tyranni - The suborder of passerine birds Tyranni (the suboscines) includes about 1,000 species, the large majority of which are South American.
These have a different anatomy of the syrinx musculature than the songbirds in the suborder Passeri, the oscine passerines. The available morphological, mt and nDNA sequence, and biogeographical data, as well as the (scant) fossil record, agrees that the Tyranni and Passeri suborders are evolutionarily distinct clades.
Passerine - A passerine is a bird of the order Passeriformes, which includes more than half of all bird species. Sometimes known as perching birds or, less accurately, as songbirds, the passerines form one of the most diverse terrestrial vertebrate orders: with over 5,000 identified species,[1] it is roughly twice as species rich as the largest of the mammal orders, the Rodentia.
The names "passerines" and "Passeriformes" are derived from Passer domesticus, the scientific name of the type species ? the House Sparrow ? and ultimately from the Latin term passer for Passer sparrows and similar small birds.

Songbird - A songbird is a bird belonging to the suborder Passeri of the perching birds (order Passeriformes). Another name that is sometimes seen as scientific or vernacular name is Oscines. This group contains some 4000 species, in which the vocal organ typically is developed in such a way as to produce a diverse and elaborate bird song.
This 'bird song' is essentially territorial in that it communicates the identity and whereabouts of an individual to other birds and also signals sexual intentions. It is not to be confused with bird calls, which are used for alarms and contact, and are especially important in birds that feed or migrate in flocks. While almost all living birds give calls of some sort, well-developed songs are only given by a few lineages outside the songbirds.

awesome
I am going to build a series of sub/infrasonic speakers in organic
that people can sit and lie down on. These speakers will not just
make sound but will vibrate at low frequencies, scientifically
designed to elict deep reactions from participants, both physiological
and psychological. Eventually I'll be hooking people up to EEG
machines to find the frequencies that will make them have peak
experiences, which could be spiritual, erotic, or "other". The bass
will also be loud enough that people nearby can hear and feel, and
will be part of a eventual multimodal experience.
This is going to be part of an installation/theme camp that I'm going
to be taking to Burning Man next year. It will include visuals,
hammocks and these bass seats. It will blow minds and make people
orgasm and/or have spiritual experiences spontaneously.

The Organ of Corti by Liminal: "This idea from liminal, an arts practice led by composer David Prior and architect Frances Crow, introduces the concept of recycling existing sounds in already sound- saturated environments (the ‘Corti’ is part of the inner ear). It will create new ways of listening to what is already around us and an acoustic lens through which to contemplate the sounds of that specific location. The music will be collected and filtered by a portable structure resembling a fairground organ. The premiere of 'The Organ of Corti' would take place in the City of London during the three weeks of the 2011 City of London Festival. Three further performances are planned over the following week as 'The Organ of Corti' travels to various sites including the M6 motorway. �"
